Reducing Toxins – Level 4 of the Wellness Triangle

When we think of the word toxic, we think of polluted air and water and perhaps of arsenic or other clearly poisonous substances. Most of the time, we don’t really think that toxins are entering our bodies and even less about getting rid of any that might be there. But that’s what today’s post is about.

The air we breathe is full of microscopic molecules of various aromas – friendly and unfriendly – and particulate matter that can enter our lungs, bloodstream, and filtering organs. In the case of smoke, gas, mold, car exhaust, and very harsh chemicals, for example, we probably know to get away from the sources and do what we can to mitigate them. But those smells are actually molecules that enter our noses, go straight to our brains, enter our blood streams, and reach every cell in our bodies in about 20 minutes! Other toxins may enter through our skin to reach our bloodstreams and cells through exposure to ingredients in such things as cleaning products, carpeting, gardening aids, extermination products. And then there is food itself, carrying toxins from pesticides and improper handling techniques or – worse – from the soil the produce is grown in, the feed ingested by animals, or growth hormones, antibiotics and other medicines fed to the animals. There are medications that come with known and unknown side effects. And there are skin care and personal care products with dangerous ingredients that may or may not be expressed clearly on the labels. What’s worse is that we may not feel or observe negative effects from these toxins until they have done significant damage.

Where do we start in putting together a strategy to protect our precious bodies and those of our loved ones?

  • We can purify the air around us, especially when we are inside with windows closed. For a summary article on indoor air quality, see: Diffusion of essential oils – especially citruses, firs/pines, and tea tree – is an excellent first line of offense and defense against impurities in the air. doTERRA’s Purify Cleansing Blend is an excellent choice against mold, mildew, germs, unwanted odors, and more.
  • We can detoxify our bodies through a number of safe, effective internal cleanses. Taking 1 to 2 drops of doTERRA Lemon essential oil in filtered water throughout the day can provide a gentle ongoing cleanse of our systems. Other oil blends and herbals can be used to cleanse our filtering organs, gastrointestinal tract, and gut on a regular basis to assure proper elimination of waste and toxins that have entered our bloodstream. • We can change our diets to use organic foods as much as possible (especially to replace the “dirty dozen” fruits and vegetables; see, minimize or eliminate foods that are inherently detrimental or toxic to our bodies (by eating according to blood type) or that are raised or prepared with ingredients that are harmful.
  • We can change our products. The average household has products that include 62 toxic chemicals, according to environmental experts. Ingredients in common household cleaners alone have been linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption, and neurotoxicity. Look for ingredients such as phthalates, triclosan, “fragrance”, QUATS, butoxyethanol, ammonia, chlorine, sodium hydroxide (lye). Here is a short, helpful article from the American Lung Association: Here is a short, helpful article from the American Lung Association if you’d like to know more. If you have questions about the safety of your common household products, a good place to find information is the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
The good news is that we can remove cleaning products, skin and personal care products, and other household, lawn and garden, car care, and many workplace products with ingredients that are toxic to our bodies and REPLACE them with pure and potent products and ingredients, such as those offered by doTERRA.
